Decisive victory and independence

November 18, 1803 The Haitian Revolution EA-EVENT-02833

By late 1803, the French expedition had been weakened by warfare, disease, supply failures, and the renewed unity of Haitian forces under Jean-Jacques Dessalines. The remaining French army concentrated around Cap-Français.

On November 18, Haitian forces attacked the fortified French position at Vertières. François Capois, later celebrated as Capois-La-Mort, became associated with exceptional bravery during the assault. Accounts of Rochambeau pausing the fighting to salute him are famous but should be treated as a later heroic tradition unless independently corroborated.

The battle forced negotiations leading to the French evacuation. Within weeks, the revolutionary leadership prepared the declaration of an independent Haiti.

Why This Event Matters

Vertières was the final major battle of the Haitian Revolution and opened the immediate path to independence.

Evidence and Curatorial Note

Level A/B — the battle and French capitulation are documented; some celebrated battlefield dialogue belongs to patriotic tradition.
