On January 1, 1804, revolutionary leaders gathered at Gonaïves and proclaimed the former French colony independent. Jean-Jacques Dessalines addressed the assembled officers and people, and the independence text associated with Louis Boisrond-Tonnerre announced a permanent break with France.

The new country adopted the name Haiti, derived from an Indigenous name associated with the island. Independence also confirmed that slavery, which Napoleon’s expedition had threatened to restore, would not return under the new state.

The declaration emerged from a brutal colonial and revolutionary war. Its language reflects the violence of French slavery, the expedition, and the leadership’s determination to prevent renewed domination.

Why This Event Matters

Haiti became the first independent state created by formerly enslaved people and the first independent Black republic of the modern era.
