At 4:53 p.m. local time on January 12, 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near Léogâne, west of Port-au-Prince. Strong shaking affected the densely populated capital region and surrounding communities.

Homes, schools, hospitals, churches, government buildings, and infrastructure collapsed. The disaster caused mass casualties and displacement, although exact death totals remain disputed because registration systems and emergency conditions made precise accounting difficult.

Haitian residents were the first responders, rescuing neighbors and organizing shelter, food, care, and burial under extreme conditions. International assistance followed, but coordination failures, unequal decision-making, disease outbreaks, and slow reconstruction generated major criticism.

The earthquake should be remembered through the lives lost, the experiences of survivors, the efforts of local communities, and the structural vulnerability produced by poverty, unsafe construction, environmental pressure, and centralized development.

Why This Event Matters

The disaster transformed Haitian life, migration, urban planning, humanitarian policy, and global perceptions of Haiti.

Evidence and Curatorial Note

Level A/B — the earthquake’s location and magnitude are scientifically established; casualty estimates vary significantly and should be presented as estimates rather than fixed totals.
