Bois Caïman is remembered as a gathering held in the northern plain of Saint-Domingue shortly before the general uprising of August 1791. Accounts connect the meeting with Dutty Boukman, Cécile Fatiman, religious observance, political coordination, and an oath of resistance.

The surviving record is fragmentary. Much of what is repeated today was written after the event, and details differ among historians. The museum therefore presents the gathering as historically important while separating documented elements from later national memory and oral tradition.

Within days of the remembered meeting, coordinated uprisings spread across the northern plantation zone. Plantations burned, enslaved workers armed themselves, and colonial authority faced a revolt that would become the Haitian Revolution.

Why This Event Matters

Bois Caïman became a foundational symbol of collective courage, spiritual authority, and the determination to destroy slavery.

Evidence and Curatorial Note

Level C — the uprising and revolutionary organizing are firmly documented; the exact ceremony, participants, words, and ritual details remain debated.
