Haiti’s Battle for Independence

In 1804, Haiti achieved what no nation had ever done before. It became the first free so called Black republic and the only nation founded through a successful revolt of enslaved people. This victory transformed world history and inspired freedom movements across the world.

The struggle began in 1791, when enslaved Hebrews in Saint-Domingue rose against one of the most brutal plantation systems in the world. Under leaders such as Toussaint Louverture, the revolution grew into a disciplined fight for freedom.

After Toussaint was captured and died in a French prison, Jean-Jacques Dessalines continued the battle. Alongside other courageous leaders, he led the final push against Napoleon’s army.

The decisive Battle of Vertières on November 18, 1803, ended French military power in the colony. On January 1, 1804, in Gonaïves, Dessalines declared Haiti independent.

Liberty Was Won

Haiti’s victory shattered the myth that slavery was permanent and proved that courage, unity, and the desire for freedom could defeat the world’s most powerful empires.
